lisztomania

when i was in high school, one of my idols was franz liszt. this composer from the 1800′s was, as i understand, the first rock star. women would throw underwear at him and his handkerchiefs would be torn to shreds by his adoring fans as souvenirs. and it’s no wonder, really. check out his photo – HOTTIE.

liszt

but actually, he was a fantastic composer, and had a pretty wide finger-span (i’ve heard anywhere from the 11th to the 13th). big hands. which makes sense since he writes annoyingly difficult songs for people like me with knubby little hands. this song “la campanella” was my favorite for a long time, here performed by evgeny kissin (he messes up a little, and it’s a little rushed, but WHOA).

and this is a song “lisztomania” by the fantastic French group Phoenix. great to skank to.

kind of prefer the clasixxx remix though. much chiller. yay for liszt!

just found this amazing rendition done by an elementary school choir in nyc – ps22

on the dynamics of birds and personal space

For the past year or two, I’ve been contemplating the placement of birds
on telephone wires and light poles:
Why do they sit where they do?
Why do they sit where they do in RELATION to one another?
Why does one bird decide to sit all on its own on one telephone wire,
while dozens choose to squeeze together on a nearby one?
Can it be explained by mating rituals, proximity to food, social interaction and hierarchy?
Or is there no reason other than birds are birds?

dogpatch photo tour

So I live in a great new neighborhood in San Francisco called the Dogpatch.  And while it’s not necessarily “new,” it is supposed to be one of the up-and-coming areas of the city.  We’re right between Mission Bay and Bayview, and east of Potrero Hill, closer to the water.  Some of the highlights of my neighborhood include: the Just For You cafe (amazing brunch), Yield Wine Bar (swanky), the San Francisco School of Digital Film, and Piccinos (Blue Bottle Coffee).

Having lived here for a few months now, I’ve been meaning to explore it more, seeing as most of the time I’m MUNI-ing or driving around and everything zips by so fast. So, this past week on a particularly sunny day, I grabbed my camera and went out.

Here are a few gems:
